Hand Made House Bricks
At Mae Lama Primary School, Sob Moei, Mae Hong Son
Project background:
Sangsan
has been working to empower the children of Ban Mae Lama primary school by
learning through experience for the last 2 years. Through our activities at the
school, we addressed the topics of science, art, sport, English, community drama, health and well-being. We believe that education is necessary for the youth and
that the learning process does not have to occur only within the classroom. For
example, we often bring young children outside and learn together under a tree.
This year, we not only hosted our English camp but we will also teach the
students how to build a house from mud.
Project preparation:
We organized 2 training camps (Aug. 08th-11th & Aug. 29th-31st 2014) in order to prepare our junior staff running the camp with us. Our junior staff is composed of all the young ethnic volunteers interested in social issues and who wish to be a part of a social transformation towards a better society. We have worked with them from high school up until university level.
During those 2 training sessions, we focused on social and gender issues, learning through experience and a child-centered approach; but we also designed, created and tested all the activities. All the activities of our past camp was taught in English and we divided the students into 4 groups: Team building, Well-being, Science and Art. Moreover, we helped the children perform a creative drama and are teaching them how to build a house from mud.

Collaborative learning:
We not only design and run the activities but we also get to learn together with the students, teachers and community. Indeed, Mae Lama primary school is a great example of a self-reliable and sustainable school. Both teachers and students are actively engaged in not only learning the curriculum but also agriculture, animal husbandry and agro products processing for their lunch.

For
these last 2 years, we have been learning the methods of agriculture applied at
the school and the way to integrate learning into the classroom in a
self-reliable way.
Our projects strongly encourage all staff, volunteers and all university scholarship students that we support to learn organic agriculture: together we practiced the “rice parachute” technique, learnt how to save seeds, planted vegetables, fruit trees, plants, and timber trees but we also built 2 mud houses.

Collaborating
with the Mae Lama school community has truly reinforced our motivation and
dedication to practice self-sustainable agriculture through formal and
non-formal education. Therefore, we aim at demonstrating that building a house
is not an impossible task and that we don't have to work for an entire life to
get the money to build it. Building a mud house is very simple especially when
we have friends who share the same heart and are willing to do something new
together. Moreover anyone can build a mud house, children, women or elders.
Schedule:
